Sommieres du Clain is a very pretty and typically French village dominated by the Chateau du Sommieres  The village square with its trees and fountain  hosts a very good restaurant, bar, a well stocked village shop, a chemist and doctor, post office, hairdresser and of course a bakery. The river Clain runs through the village and under the town bridge
 
The river meanders peacefully through the valley with occasional stretches of fast flowing water.  The mill stream or leat, is fed from natural springs, and flows under the house before joining the main river. The woods are home to many species of wildlife including deer and red squirrels and the birds are too numerous to list.  The butterflies and dragonflies are abundant in the spring and summer , attracted by  the large variety of wild flowers.  The gardens are naturally beautiful with woodland and riverside walks.
 
Outside  there is ample parking, a huge lawn running along the river bank on which you can play badmington, or boule; a swimming pool, barbeque and a games room.  A daily trip to the village to collect fresh croissants and bread or for a drink in the bar becomes an adventure if you row up stream in the boat.  Alternatively you can cycle or take a leisurely walk along the river bank

Fishing in a well stocked river on your doorstep, canoeing, cycling, walking, bird watching and painting – all on site. A trip to the world famous Vallee des Singes in the next village, Les Giants de Ciel (40 mins) Futuroscope (40 mins) Poitiers with its fabulous cathedral and range of shops (35 mins) or even La Rochelle (90 mins) may appeal to you. The local village markets and the many interesting old towns that surround us are well worth a visit or you may prefer to just sit by the river, relax and let your troubles float away.

Riverside Gite
Part of the old mill has been tastefully converted into a self contained gite with its own private entrance, 2 en suite bedrooms (1 double bedded and one twin-bedded) a fully equipped modern kitchen/diner and a beautiful beamed and vaulted lounge with English TV and DVD. Fitted cherry wood cupboards and display shelves line two walls and house a good selection of books and games . A third bedroom is available if required. All rooms are centrally heated and have stunning views of the river..
